This is a tutorial by Dave Scotland, Dave comes to us from a 10 year background in the industry including companies such as Disney (Japan) and Warner Brothers (USA). This tutorial uses 3DS Max 2009 and After Effects and as this is a new area for us we're releasing this at just $30 for the first 200 people to download it.
The Asteroid Chase Tutorial 3DS Max Section Parts [01 - 12]
Ever wanted to create a cinematic space-opera shot? Well in this tutorial we will do exactly that and the best part is we will do it from start to finish... You will get to take various 3D assets into 3D Studio Max and prepare them for this spectacular "Asteroid Chase" sequence. You’ll learn how to set-up looping animation for various effects as well as interactive, secondary lighting. You will also learn to create the asteroids using sub-D modelling and displacement.
You will learn how to create the main scene then how to successfully merge in various assets for animation. Then through the use of constraints and path animation, you will learn how to bring the scene to life with fluid movement and control. You will learn how to create the flight animation system for "set and forget", random movement and realistic results.
Then you will light the shot and learn some great camera animation tricks and techniques for that dynamic look and feel. You will be stepped through the process of creating particle systems for the asteroid field, lasers, blast rocks and ship trails and more.
Then finally, you will learn how to setup various "scene states" for generating batch rendering and render the scene to various layers needed for the compositing process. By the end of this tutorial you will have the knowledge and confidence to tackle any space scene using 3D Studio Max and you will be inspired to create your own grand, space-opera sequence... Enjoy.
The Asteroid Chase Tutorial After Effects Section Parts [13 - 17]
Once all of your footage assets are in, you will learn how to layer and pre-compose various elements for the final shot. You'll go through the process of adding various effects and how to achieve that filmic look.
You will then learn how to create a second shot by re-using effects and settings which will ultimately provide better continuity and time-efficiency. Then you will be shown how to apply colour correction and grading together with post-production motion blur. You'll learn how to create some great motion graphics for a classic heads-up-display (HUD) which will then be used as an overlay element for one of the shots.
By the time you have finished this tutorial, you will have a much better level of knowledge regarding compositing and you will be able to take that knowledge and ultimately improve your 3D endeavors. After all, in a production environment, most if not all 3D, eventually ends up with compositing or post production. So a greater understanding of how this process works, can only ever improve you work. Not to mention, increase your employability, if that's what you're looking for. All the reference material you will need is included in part zero.
